Porphyry cobbles are roughly cubic elements with the upper and lower surfaces in natural cleft and the four sides mechanically split. The edges are not necessary the same and the mechanically split faces may be irregular. The cobbles are divided into the following categories for lineal paving or for overlapping arcs:

Lineal paving:

  • Type 3"x3": the size of the top is 3 with a tolerance of about +/- 0 1/5 and the height/thickness varies from 1 1/5 to 2 or from 2 to 4;
  • Type 4"x4": the size of the top is 4 with a tolerance of about +/- 0 1/5 and the height/thickness varies from 1 1/5 to 2 or from 2 to 4;
  • Type 4"x random length: the size of the top is 4 width and the length is random. The height/thickness varies from 2 to 3 1/5 or from 3 1/5 to 4.

Overlapping arcs:

  • Type 4/6: the size of the top is between a minimum of 1 6/10 and a maximum of 2 4/5. The height/ thickness varies from 1 6/10 to 2 ;
  • Type 6/8: the size of the top is between a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 . The height/thickness varies from 2 1/5 to 3 ;
  • Type 8/10: the size of the top is between a minimum of 3 1/5 and a maximum of 4 1/3. The height/ thickness varies from 3 to 4 1/3.

The final use of the paving determines the type of thickness to use. Low thickness are used for paving without or with light traffic, higher thickness for medium-high traffic.
